Small but powerful. A tiny compact camera flash with TTL.

At the behest of a good friend I decided to delve back into flash photography. After some internet research I found this little flash that probably fit my needs.

I am not going to bore you with the specifications which you can find here Godox IT30, but this Chinese lighting brand appears to be making waves firstly by its build quality and its competitive pricing. May not meet your needs but it is sure going to give its best shot.

First Impressions

Tiny in size but with enough power to fulfill most needs., especially indoor activity photography. Its TTL performance is excellent and with the ability to control the power output your range of creativity is expand. Simple to carry around and is definitely pocket friendly.

How Have You Tested

I firstly took this out to shoot family dinners and family events. This was something I usually shoot flash free as I always felt that flash photography made the lighting too harsh. However, now that I can control the power on the fly I found it kind of fun.

The flash did not dissappoint. The skin tones did not look blown out. It actually looked natural.

The TTL works flawlessly. I did not try it in manual mode. What was great about this flash is that it was also re-chargeable via USB-C hence a very clear savings there in terms of time and money. The flash also supports off camera shooting once paired with one of Godox's transmitters/triggers. The price point is nothing short of spectacular at RM270 (USD$70). The build quality is also excellent at that price. It feels metal to the touch and very solidly built. The touch screen is a great feature but you also have a scroll wheel for those who doesn't like grimy fingerprints on their screens. There are a few versions represented by the alphabet on top of the flash unit, S-Sony, F-Fujifilm, C-Canon and N-Nikon.

Pros and Cons

Cons: Some may fine its low profile a bit close to the lens and a hood may interfere with the flash and create a shadow. I did not find this an issue but it was also an easy fix via the Godox TTL HotShoe Riser. This riser also allows the flash to bounce all for USD$18. The range would probably be another complaint but I didn't find it an issue as I don't really foresee myself shooting at range. Blinding my subject isn't one of my fun things to do. The lack of manueverability wound be an issue as even with the hot shoe riser it cannot twist sideways for portraits.

Pros: Pricing for one. Lightweight and ease of portability (small enough to easily fit in your pocket. Great TTL capability. Not to forget, the solid build with a color touch screen all for USD$70. It makes for an excellent travel companion. Something your EDC camera bag can easily accomodate.

The Final Score

9/10 - Don't deprive yourself of this great flash unit. Simple to use, great TTL features with a solid build. Price wise its a winner! There is always a need or want to use native flashes but this little beast will not dissapoint.
